My thoughts on #1...

1. I know some people around here (SirQuack) who had something like 3 different subs (all Axiom) in his theater at one point. Same brand though, and all were true beasts. You can always try it and if you don't notice an improvement, you can sell it then.

Brandon - The Marantz is a pretty stout receiver. I have pushed it hard in a 4800 cubic foot room and never had an issue with it shutting down. It was tested to deliver 112 watts x 5 channels, all channels being driven, which means you can expect SPL levels above the 105 dB reference in even a large room, for each speaker individually.

You will be quite safe.

I got the "budget really isn't an issue" part but even so...

1. You want a VP180

2. You want awesome subwooferage

3. You want larger mains but for HT I would argue that M60s or M80s would be fine.

M100s would be even better, of course, but you're getting into diminishing returns. I have been most impressed with systems that have effortless subwooferage so spend money there first. Not "big bass", just enough sub/subs in the right places to keep up with the rest of the system without limiting output or making embarrassing noises.

No I have never used "subwooferage" in a sentence before but I saw it in this thread and liked it.

BTW for a music system (typically 2.0) I would cheerfully go all the way to M100s or LFR1100s, although I stopped at M60s there as well (so yes, old M60s in the HT and new M60s in the music system downstairs).

Early Christmas present shipped today...

VP180 & M80's! I won't pull the trigger on the EP800 until I get the man cave set up in the new house and evaluate how everything sounds w/ my existing sub, but it's still on my wish list.

Very excited. I'll upload some pics once everything is set up.

Finally got the man cave put together last weekend, other than tucking the wires more neatly.

Once I find my "real" camera I'll grab some better photos, but for now, here are quickie camera phone photos... and maybe eventually I'll figure out how to embed images correctly too. wink

My system:

Tuner: Marantz SR7008
TV: Samsung UN65H7150
BluRay: Sony BDP-S570
HD DVD: Samsung BD-UP5000
Media Streaming: Roku 3 & Chromecast 2
Sub: (1) HSU VTF-2 MK4 subwoofer
Center: (1) Axiom VP180
FR/FL: (2) Axiom M80
Surrounds & Rear: (4) Axiom QS8

My initial impression after upgrading from the M22-->M80 and the VP150-->VP180 (other than, "damn, those are big ass speakers") was that they were a bit boomy and overpowering. But, once I dialed it in with the DSP... pure bliss. It's been a bit crazy so I've only been able to watch Furious 7 and a few favorite scenes from other movies, but it's really night and day. The previous speakers were excellent, but this is turning it up several notches. The dialog from the VP180 is amazingly clear and full, and the M80's are truly amazing.

I'll break them in a bit and re-tune, and then report back on any change, but I can't imagine it getting much better than this.

Thanks again everyone for the help in making the purchase decisions.

I'm still on the fence about getting the EP800 since my HSU is doing a great job, but we'll give it some time. And, hey, 30 day return policy right...? cool

Looking good, just in time to enjoy it over the holiday. As an aside, the boomy is due to the M80's being so close to the wall, they are a lot of speaker for a small room but I love mine.

even another 2-3" more from the wall will make the speaker sound a whole load better

Yeah, that's a good point about proximity to the wall. I'm being stubborn about placement because I don't want the speakers half on/half off the rug, but I'll get over it eventually and move the couch and chair out of the room temporarily so I can shift the rug. I've been doing renovations & unpacking the past six weeks so the prospect of taking the door off the hinges so I can fit the [extremely heavy] couch through the door sounds exhausting. wink
