I set up M22s and the EP175 today but the sub plays for about two songs and then shuts off (red light). Any idea what the problem is?

I connected the Pre-Out Sub RCA on the receiver (Onkyo 601) to the Line Level In RCA (white) on the sub. Speakers set to small. Sub turned on. Left and Front speakers calibrated to the same level as the sub.

Plinko, someone posted the same problem the other day.
Try upping the gain in your receiver settings for the subwoofer (perhaps to +1, +2, or higher) and then use the volume knob on the back of the sub to turn the volume back down so your level calibration remains the same.
Some of the subs apparently are not sensitive enough to wake up with a weaker signal. The boost should help.

I tried that. I had it up to +10. And I lowered the fronts (to -2). Crossover freq is at 80. I'll try one more time. Also trying a new cable. I must say that I find it odd that it works for a couple of songs then shuts off.

Maybe you could try feeling the heatsinks on the back (if there are any) If they feel Really hot then theres something wrong thats making it shut off. I dont think this would be a problem though.

Plink, you may have just misspoke in your last reply, but it doesn't have anything to do with the setting on the fronts. Set the sub(not fronts)trim level on the receiver higher(so that it feeds the sub amp more voltage)and then reduce the level control on the sub itself so that the overall sub level remains about the same.

Plink, it still isn't clear from your language whether we're on the same page yet. Yes, the crossover control on the sub should be set all the way up, but that's to get it out of the way of the crossover set on the 601, which should be at 80Hz with all the speakers set "small". It has nothing to do with the sub turn on problem. The overall listening volume also wouldn't necessarily have to be increased. What should be increased(if this isn't what you've already done)is the sub level control in the 601 menu, as described on p.43 of the manual. It varies from -15 to +12 and should be set a few points higher to increase the voltage which is being sent to the sub amp, which should allow it to turn on and stay on more reliably(unless there's possibly a defect in the sub amp circuit).

Since I had a very similar problem last week, I've found that turning up the volume on the sub (not the receiver) to about 3/4ths also helps. I use an Outlaw ICBM, so I can adjust the master volume from there. Hope you get things working. I know how frustrated you are. Stupid sub. *GRUMBLE!! GRUMBLE!! GRUMBLE!!*

I think we are on the same page John. Thanks. : ) I read about your issues Spock. Does that ICBM offer advantages?

Thanks everyone. Things are working wonderfully. I put the sub to 12 db and crossover on full on the sub. Sub volume turned down much lower than I had previously. I setup my full system today and its great (albeit a temporary setup until we move). In fact, its amazing.

The Getz/Gilberto sacd sounded unbelievable. The highs are a little crunchy but I suppose that will dissipate after a few days of play. Nothing to complain about though. These speakers are fab. My girlfriend couldn't believe the difference in sound compared to what we used to have.

The ICBM is more of a luxury. Basically it adds a crossover for all 5 channels and the sub. Most people use it between their DVD-A/SACD player, but it can also be used between an amp and preamp. This way you get analogue bass management for every component. That's how I'm using it and I'm really glad that I got one. I haven't finished my 5.1 system just yet (still need the center channel) but I know that it will really show it's use when I start playing DVD-A's and SACD's. Oh and glad you got your sub to stay on too.

Sorry this is OT but every time I see the acronym ICBM it makes me flinch. To me that stands for InterContinental Ballistic Missile...

I'm sure they were aware of the match when Outlaw chose the acronym. I'm sure they were shooting more for he "power" than "destruction" of the namesake.
