stbean-

i dont think this thread was ignored on purpose, its just that the 'sub' question has been brought up about 20 times in the last month or so.. go do some reserarch in prior threads and you will find the 'sub' topic lines. or even go put 'sub' in the search function, and you should find PLENTY of info to read for a few days.

GENERAL BELIEF- axiom subs are good, HSU and SVS are better. i dont think you will be disappointed with any of them. just ensure that you purchase one that is compatible to your room size.. if you have alot of air to move, you will need a big sub to move it.. sounds simple, eh?

The main problem with Axiom subs, is that the $620 EP350 is comparable to the $499 HSU VTF-2. So the HSU is more bang for the buck. The HSU VTF-3 is supposed to be really impressive, though.

However, the Axiom comes in all the great Axiom finishes and grilles, while the HSU come in plain black. You can not go wrong with either.

don't forget about the nice rosewood and piano black finish options on the Hsus, snippy.

-The Axiom subs are also forward firing while Hsu subs are downward firing (maybe Alan can speak for Ian on his choice here?)

-the Axioms use aluminum woofers - not sure what the Hsus are

-the Hsus do have the additional features of continuously variable crossovers and (the selling point for me) a defeatable auto-on... I can turn it on and off and not have to worry about sending it enough trigger voltage

Other than that, subwoofers aren't really my forte, so I have to step back from this discussion.

Wow - I always assumed that all subs had three power settings: Off, On, Auto-On. All of the subs that I have dealt with have had those three settings - heh.

Ya that downward firing is kindof wierd. I dunno If the sound of my loose floorboards rattling would sound so great.

The SVS sits on a plate. When I opted for the SVS 20-29PCi, I didi it for the same reasons I chose Axiom for the speakers. This is where SVS (and HSU) excels - it's what they do and they do it extremely well. All three companies have world-class Custoemr Service. Comments on the forum indicate that the EP350 is a good sub. I just wanted one that was based on a focused expertise. Pick the one you like - you won't be disappointed.

Three Subwoofers Face Off: SVS 25-31PCi, HSU Research VTF-3, and Axiom Audio EP-350 Subwoofers

"Final Thoughts
If you haven't figured out already, the SVS emerges as the winner of this face-off. You'll also be surprised to learn it is the least expensive of the group! It just goes to show you that more expensive doesn't always mean better. At just $549, the SVS is the best bargain in bass. "

SVS seems first, HSU second, and Axiom just doesn't make good subs, as it seems. I've seen a lot of other reviews with the same train of thought(SVS first, HSU at a close second with the upper models, and Axiom last).

Hope this makes your decision easier.

HSU beats SVS in my book. I had both briefly and compared....I can't speak for the Axiom sub though.

I would like to replace my EP350 w/ an SVS 20-39 PCI+, but the EP350 is no slouch. It rattles the walls and wakes the baby. After toying w/ crossovers, phase switch, and placement I have it set up (by ear) where the bass is extremely tactile. Heavy, thudding, grippy bass w/out any booming at all. Very good for music.
I'm curious about that particular SVS, though. The ability to go really low and loud (525 watt amp?) would be fun. And in my set-up the taller cylinder would have a much more elegant appearance.

I'm with Will...I like my EP350 and don't feel like I'm missing anything, but then again, I haven't heard an SVS or HSU. The EP350 does shake the walls, floors and couch.

Thasp, Axiom actually DOES make a good sub, it simply suffers a bit in comparison to the SVS and HSU subs. Satterd around the forum are a few compares folks have done and the Axiom holds its own.

axiom subs are good - hsu are better.

similar form factor, similar size - however, the hsu just has more features such as variable tunability (vtfs), generally larger amps, and are heavier - i like solid internal bracings!

however, if u want power beyond reason - the svs can do that! i have a 25-31PC+ and boy, it pounds like nothing i have ever heard... and for music, it can blend right in with my m22s.

JOEY's PC Sound System: Polk LSi7 (x4, mains and rears) and SVS 25-31PC+ (sub)
