one more question. if i don't have to replace my reciever at this time, it would be nice to avoid spending the money. however, this is the reason I was considering replacing it. it is an older sony 5.1(GA8ES) and is only dolby digital ready. I would have to buy another piece of equipment to make it useful?? correct?
let me know. i'm new to all this, but can't wait to get my HT up and going.

That is correct. It would probably be more cost effective to purchase a new receiver. Decent models start around $300-$400.

Hi Ron. You might want to stop over to ecost. They have some excellent refurb/B stock Denon 1804s and 2803s. Serious savings. Quite a few folks on the forum have had good experiences with them and Denon is an excellent brand.

Not that I wouldn't love to spend Ron's money, but why exactly does he NEED a new receiver? The current receiver is Dolby Digital 5.1 (though he hasn't used it yet), and he doesn't even want to go to 6.1 or 7.1 at this point.
I only recently replaced my nearly six year old Sony receiver. It too has 5.1 Dolby Digital only, but it's all you need to enjoy 5.1 digital soundtracks on any DVD. Most DVDs aren't even offered in DTS, much less 6.1. None are offered in discrete 7.1 at this point.
Ron, if you haven't heard 5.1 Dolby Digital from your setup yet, hang on to your receiver for a little while, hook it up in 5.1 mode, and see what you think. You might find you're able to hang on to it longer than you expected.
Just my $.02.

Oops... I think I just figured it out.
Dolby Digital ready, huh? If you don't have a DVD player with a built-in decoder, then you do need a different receiver.
Remember, kids. Reading is fundamental. Reading for comprehension is a different story.

badger/Bren, with HT reading comprehension is more of an art than a science. While you picked up the technical piece, you missed the larger scope of the exercise. Relative to HT, the word "NEED" is used almost 98% of the time in describing the requirement to the spouse. In aficiando speak, it translates almost directly to "I really WANT it". This particular disease, which really gets abooster shot from Axiom, has no actual bearing on a need. Please, let's try to find our center again.
