I had a Yamaha 2400 for about 6 months and I used the "presence" channels. I love the effect from the "presence" feature. It created a huge front sound stage (which was great for music as well as HT) and gave more of a 3D feel to the overall presentation without sounding artificial and it made the room seem much larger than it actually was.
I don't think that you will be able to use the front "presence" channels and the surround "back" channels at the same time. I think the amp has to be assigned to one or the other with the Yamaha.
I tried it both ways and IMO, while the surround back configuration seemed to be slightly more enveloping, I didn't feel like it was worth the extra expense if you have to buy extra speakers. I did however feel that the presence channel was worth the extra expense. The Yamaha 2400 was a very fun receiver and I really enjoyed using it and experimenting with the different features and configurations.
I live the life I love and I love the life I live.

ElTorrente, yes you do have a torrent of questions, but I'll try a couple. I agree with the previous replies that with you sitting almost against the back wall there's little advantage to 6.1 or 7.1. The side surrounds should be placed as close to(or possibly even better, right on)the backwall as possible to give a little bit of back surround effect, and this is probably the best you can expect in that seating position. As Mike(mwc)reported, you can't use presence speakers and back surround speakers with the 2400 simultaneously.
Powered indoor FM antennas aren't very effective and don't have any real benefit compared to the regular dipole antenna made of twinlead which I use. This article may be of interest.

Cool- Thanks for your advice everyone.
For some reason, I haven't been able to log in to the forums- everytime I tried, I got an error screen of some sort "can't find X directory.." or something. I turned off my firewall software and I can get in now, never had problems on message boards before though.. but I digress..
I'm going back and forth on the 60s and 22s. I know I'll love either one, so I'm just gonna buy what I'm feeling on that particular day (next week sometime probably). I'll stick to 5.1 for now, and go 7.1 when I move in to a house in a year or so.
I've been doing a lot of reading on subwoofers, and I'm thinking an stf-2 is the best bang for the buck.
When I was looking around for a good ht reciever, I was really hoping that H/K would have what I wanted. I only say that simply because I have always associated that name with high quality- and they look cool . I have read and re-read stuff about the h/k 7200, and it would be my second choice. It IS high quality of course, but the Yamaha has all the power and gadgets I was looking for. In fact, I think I'm gonna find the lowest price and order one tonight, along with an MX700.
I don't need the Harmony or the tweek-o pronto. I think I can set up the MX700 to work just pretty much like the harmony actually.

Oh yeah- btw.. I'm from San Diego, so I'm one of the few non-Laker fans down here I think. They are just too good for their own good- they can sleep-walk thru games and win by 15 :/ . I lived in Grand Rapids when I was growing up, so I gotta stay true to Michigan and root for the Pistons.
If enough of you people out there root for the Pistons, it will sway the Basketball Gods to finally bring justice to the NBA.

Be sure to check around for the best price on the MX700. But whatever you do don't pay the full $350 price for it. As I said earlier, I got the open box version, and it is pristine, plus it's $160 cheaper.

Well, I pulled the trigger on the rxv2400 and the mx700. I got the Yamaha for $794 including shipping, and I got the MX700 HERE for $167 delivered. For the MX700, it said that it is "..new, first quality products with valid US warrantees. We do not sell used, reconditioned, or refurbished items." - so I feel safe with the purchase.

Good job. That's an excellent price. Makes you wonder who pays the $350 full price. Wish I'd found that site.
