Hi,
Will banana plug give higher sound quality or it's just a matter of convenience?

thanks.

Convenience... though the purist in me says "any connection added into the signal path will degrade the signal" and the realist in me counters "yes, but to an extent no one will ever perceive".

Though, taking someone like BigJohn - he gets better sound from the banana plugs because with his close spaced binding posts and his sausage-like fingers, without the banana plugs, his speaker wires would be thrown as far as possible out his door in frustration - leading to a bad audio experience.

Don't know why but that struck me as extremely funny. I got a great mental picture of BigJohn struggling to thread that tiny little wire with his enormous fingers...tongue sticking out the side of his mouth and all. Too funny!

Just Bren... short for Brenden, anglicized from the Irish Gaelic Braenainn.

If I remember correctly bigJOHN likes to put his greasy sausage eatin' fingers on the speaker drivers. Any word yet if he was able to supress the fetish with his new Axioms?

Jeez, I was hoping no one would go there. That whole episode was just disturbing . Poor Shannon is stuck in the middle of the Texas outback with bigjohn and we can't help her. A sausage eating, beer swilling, speaker driver toucher. God help her.

ya'll are cracking up this morning!

but, i am ashamed to say, yes i was there with my big sausage hands, tongue out, trying to wind the wire around the post. after about 15 minutes of that, and still getting a bad connection, thats when i decided to go to the electronic store and get the banana plugs. one of my better decisions in life!

and my cone fetish WAS/IS gone. on the first night, i did a little 'tap, tap' on the cones(with clean hands), ran my fingers over the gorilla ports, and then put the screens on, never to grope them since.. although, funny story.. i had a friend over to check out the system(this was the guy who was all gung-ho for polk audio), and i took the screens off. i could tell, he wanted to 'tap' them but just looked at them and ran his fingers over the gorilla ports.. i told him, "go ahead, you can touch them", and he did the tap.. he started laughing and said," well i wanted to , but some people really hate that, and i didnt want to piss you off"!! i just laughed and told him i did the same thing.. it made me feel good to know that i aint the only one with this 'fetish' thing.

so, just to clarify.. there is no speaker fondling going on at bigjohns residence.

BTW- i came home from work yesterday, and shannon had a friend over, and they were scrapbooking to elton john, turned up pretty loud(at least by her standards). shannon had played the opening thunderstorm scene from 'open range' for her.. i was sooooo proud.. my wife, showing off the HT system.. i was speechless. i think, against her will, she is starting to like it as much as me. she has music playing almost everyday when i get home.

bigjohn, I must ask. Are you concerned that Shannon and her friend might have been, well, touching the cones before you got home? I hesitate to surface the question, but the husband is usually the last to know.

BigJohn running his fingers over a gorilla port...not an image I ever thought I'd have.

and Ray...you were talking about the M60's cones, not each other's right? I can't imagine BigJohn's reaction if that he came home to find that!

Sausage grease doesn't make the best lube, either --especially if it's from hot links.

I was speaking of the M60 cones spiff, but you comment piqued my interest. I'm guessing bigjohn might have dealt with that surprise in a very predictable way!!!

once again, a good laugh to start the day..

well, if they would have been touching 'each others cones', i probably would have grabbed a beer and a chair to get a good seat of the action. just kidding..

but, once again, making my mind wonder.. i had another funny thought.. and i hope no one gets offended by this. i read an ad in the local paper yesterday about our local 'adult' shop on the outskirts of town.. anyway, the ad said that they had porn on DVD.. i didnt know this, i thought it was all on video. so now my curiosity is all peaked, and i am curious as to what porn sounds like on 5.1 surround. i know, stupid thought, but i cant help myself. so, i think i might have to run out there this weekend and see what sort of selection they have. come on now guys.. what sort of audiophile would i be if i didnt fully test ALL sorts of listening inputs on my new HT.. well, at least thats the excuse i am gonna give shannon.. hope she buys it!!

james- no, my wife doenst have a 30 something sister in cali, sorry. but she does have a 21 year old sister in austin that is single. so if you are ever out in central texas, let me know. BTW- she is a knock out!!

What would come out of the surrounds? Maybe the director's voice, "Now move your hand through your hair. Grab the hoola-hoop..."?

Mostly it's the sound of the fluffer, thumbing through a paperback and drinking coffee until she/he is needed again...

Maybe in the movies that Spiff is watching...

And, btw, what a great and terrible job being a fluffer must be. Talk about getting no recognition for your hard work (so to speak).

Well, someone has to keep the fella excited between scenes while they setup the lights and microphones and have a snack. Though, perhaps with viagra and cialis (sp?) maybe they don't need help anymore.

bigjohn, be VERY careful in your choice of material. I had a particularly nasty experience when I didn't get what I was expecting after popping "Free Willy" into the DVD player. How could that NOT be what it clearly indicated it was?

What happened Ray? Did you get a copy of the Clinton White House security tapes?

Hehehehe...in fact their's a movie called The Fluffer. No it's not porn, and no it's not worth watching. What a waste of time that one was.

I hope you don't mind me going back to the original question. I'm an electrical engineer and I'm here to tell you that using a bananna plug will not be any better or worse than other connection methods. I just stripped my wires back and tinned the strands with solder. This made a nice strong connection using Axiom's high quality binding posts. If you choose this method be careful you don't cut into the wire when stripping the insulation off. I'm using a high flex 14 ga. that has some real small strands. They were a but delicate while stripping and it took a while, but I know I have an excellent connection on the speaker and at the amp.
