Why would I hear a low humming noise with my ceiling fan on? Is there anything I can do to get rid of it?

Are you using one of those varaible-speed resistors with the ceiling fan? Those are notorious for adding lots of noise to the electrical circuit. You should try plugging your HT gear into a separate circuit from the one the ceiling fan is running on. Another thing that might or might not help is one of the surge-protectors/power-centers that have filters to reduce line noise, such as the Panamax line, though depending on how bad it is these devices may or may not solve the problem.

I don't know what a variable speed resistor is. The plate on the wall has two switches, one for the light and one for the fan. The fan speed is regulated with the pull chain on the fan. I will check on the separate circuit issue. I don't have many plug options. There are only two on the wall that the ht stuff is against. My guess is that both are on the same circuit. I'll check on the panamax thing. Thank you for your reply.

Jkohn is correct. A variable-speed resistor is basically like a continuous dimmer (for lights), used to vary motor speeds of fans. Many of them are totally unshielded and radiate all kinds of spurious interference. The Panamax might be of some help, but using a separate circuit to power the fan or your amplifier/receiver is the best option.
