Just needed a little advice. I am totally new to HT and have been researching day and night for a couple of weeks now and have decided on the Epic Grand Master system along with a yamaha RX-V750 receiver for a 15'x15' room with 8' ceiling. I have read that it might be a good idea to go with a different sub such as SVS or HSU, could I get a little more info. on this or any other recommendations. Thanks alot for your time!

Sounds to me like your right on track. In a room that size I'd recommend the Hsu STF-2.

Enjoy your new gear!

You're gonna love the 750 - I have it powering a pair of M60s, VP100 and a pair of QS8s - I also have a set of crappy kenwoods for the rears for 7.1 (which I like, by the way).

I went with the Hsu STF-2 and love it. It provides more than enough bass, and I often find myself turning it all down because of the neighbors! I have a room that is 18 x 10 with 9 foot ceilings. It's an open room, some a lot of sound is lost as it escapes through two big openings in the room. BUt I find that this combo works exceptionally well.... you'll likely also find people who will recommend going with the M22s and a sub. Both appear to be a great combo.

If you're going to use your home theater mostly for movies, I migth consider going with the M50s or 40s, depending on your budget too. For movies, the frequency range and detail isn't as important for your mains (I think). But in that case, you might consider using taht extra saved cash for the VP150.

I assure you that you'll be happy no matter what! Take the plunge and don't look back. You won't regret it.

Thanks alot for the replies. I was actually wondering about going to the VP150, would this make a huge difference? This system will be used for movies and music equally but can't be jammed too loud because of the neighbors - too bad! Thanks again.

Hello Jrmav, from what I've read I think the VP100 would more than suit your needs in a room like that. The VP100 sounds the same as the VP150. The VP150 just plays louder and has a bit better dispersion characteristcs, both of which allow it to perform better in Larger spaces. But for your space the VP100 would be just great. IF you are looking to spend more on speakers and you're sitting >10' from the mains you could consider the M60 as fronts. Although I'd only do this if I had the money to burn or some tower fetish, as the M22 will truly be great.

Cheers, Jag

The Axiom sub (EP175?) would have no problem filling that room with tons of bass. Don't forget the KLH sub at Costco for $89!

Was that a pun at the KLH sub at Costco, or is the sub there actually pretty decent for $89? I've looked at that one before, but thought, for $89 it has to be terrible.

i think he was kidding around!!

there are a few econo-subs avail if you need to save a few bucks.

the 10" dayton sub from parts express is decent sub for around $150 bucks.. and the vega subs, the LW-10, and the LW-12 are pretty good at around $160-$200. keep in mind, these subs do not have the ultra low extension as the much better HSU, SVS, and AXIOM subs, but they will do in a pinch. i have the vega LW-12, and it has plenty of low end bass, but can be boomy at times.

it comes down to quality-vs-price.. the choice is yours!!

EDIT- peter, your son keeps lookin at me!!!

That's what I figured. My first sub ever, three years ago, was a Jensen. It was only $100, and it did the trick till I started reading about SVS...and BAM...now I got the good stuff. I stil have that Jensen and am getting ready to hook it up in a second room, really is a great sub for $100...just can't hit the low lows in the movies, but for music, it's fine.
