I have read that this sub has some rave reviews. After a heads up, I went to compusa and picked one up. I installed it in my current setup(HK AVR325,M22ti,vp100,HK HKSUB 12. I am thinking the HK sub does better than this hsu. The hsu does go a tad lower but it seems to "bottom out" way faster than the HK. Is the HK 12 a decent sub? Does anyone have any experience with the two or can offer some insight? Both x-over @ 80hz. Thanks,Blake

Do you actually hear it bottoming out? Like metal hitting metal?

Have you calibrated?

Dont know if its metal on metal. I think the amp is overdriving the xsus of the driver. Not totally sure what you mean about calibating. I am a newbie of sorts.

More than likely you are over driving the sub......ie the volume on the sub is set to high.By calibrating Curtis means have you matched the volume of all of you speakers including the sub.Do a search on calibrating you should find plenty of info on it here in the forum. Its impossable to set up a sub correctly without doing so.

Kraz,

A Quick Overview of Home Theater Calibration

CALIBRATION TECHNIQUES

Calibration is an absolute necessity. It's generally accepted that if one tries to balance speaker volumes by ear, the sub is usually set way too hot. This could be the reason for the STF-2 "bottoming." I have the STF-2 in an 11.5x18x8 room, and have never had any problem with it bottoming.

At what setting is your subwoofer volume right now? After I was done calibrating, the volume control was only one hash mark above minimum, due west on your compass, 9:00, 270 degrees. Start with lower volume and get accustomed to what strong, clean bass sounds like. THEN you can start turning it up.

Curtis, next GTG (or the next one I'm able to attend), you can buy me a beer.

Kraz, Do NOT be concerned about being a "newbie of sorts." All of us were one of those at some time. That's what forums, like this one, are all about..........helping others figure out this subjective, complicated, but rewarding, hobby. You got questions? Ask away. And, if someone attempts to make you feel stupid, simply ignore them.
