I have a pair of M80ti's and I want to run them on a Bryston 4B ST Amp. The only problem is that the amp runs at 500 Watts. Do the speakers have protection that will kick in in case I play the speakers too loud at 500 Watts?

Rob.

i do not think the M80's have a 'peak power' shut-off type safety valve. i am not positive on this, but i have never heard anyone mention it. hopefully alan will chime in and clarify.

i can say this. if you actually push your M80's with the full 500 watts, it aint gonna matter if the speakers are blown or not, cause you will be deaf. unless you have them set up in a gymnasium, the 80's will be painfully loud. my M60's being pushed with 100 watts becomes painful well before maximum volume.

Tom, if you do a search, somewhere in a thread there was talk of Ian pumping 1000 watts into the 80s with no adverse effects. The key is clean, undistorted power with NO clipping of the amp. It is far more dangerous to push an UNDERPOWERED amp past it's limits. You will be fine. I would love to try that Bryston on my 80's!!

TomMystery,

Real80sMan is correct. We quote the M80ti's power handling very conservatively. They will handle up to 1200 watts per channel (clean power, no clipping) without damage. There is no internal fusing of the drivers.

The M80s will mate beautifully with the Bryston 4B amp. That is the amp we used for years at the National Research Council in Ottawa for double-blind listening tests. It is also where listening tests and anechoic measurements on Axiom prototypes are conducted.
