"1. M60's bass: I find myself wanting more bass from the two M60s (or is it the receiver's fault?). This may qualify me as bass-freak"

If you like base, then prioritize that. Your cheapest "big bass" option is probably a Hsu STF-2. That would still leave you money for QS8s.

I've had both VP100 and 150, and I definitely recommend the 150. However it's a bigger and heavier, so think about mounting issues. It might not fit (weight or size-wise) on top of your TV.

QS4/VP100 and Hsu STF-2 would only slightly exceed your budget. That would sound great, too.

You have a large listening room. In general that suggests QS8/VP150, but part depends on how far back your listening position is.

Thank you all for your very helpful inputs.

I think I'll go with a STF2 ($400), a pair of QS8 ($500), and a VP100 ($240), for a total of $1,140. While the room is large, the actual listening areas is only about 10x10, with an 8ft ceiling.

Why do I always set a budget only to exceed it 100% of the time?

Once I get everything set up (probably in a month's time), I'll update how things go.

PS: Some time ago CompUSA had the STF2 on sale for $349. Not any more!

Quite a bit less than that, actually. I (and several other regulars here) picked them up for $200 or less. Sorry to rub the salt in, but it sounds like you're on your way to a terrific setup!

Man, your salt is working!

Seems like the lowest price now for the STF2 is $399 direct from HSU. Ebay has it for $320 (no warranty), but I've always been a timid ebayer.

Updates:

I've decided to drop the vp100 center and ordered only 2xQS8 ($500) and an SVS PB10-ISD ($470 with ship) instead of the STF2. Should get them all by mid next week. Pretty much what foghorn and several others suggested - thank you!

Came in a tad under budget. Hopefully 4.1 is good enough for sacd/dvd-a. From what I've read a center is not an absolute necessity for multi-channel music.

Also ordered Hotel California and Imaginary Day (dvd-a) and Dark Side of the Moon (sacd). Play time!
