That's great news snakeyes. At least your getting players. My team, the Oakland Athletics,are giving them away. Fortunately Steinbrenner didn't get his hands on this one.

But he did get his hands on the "big unit".

It's so nice to hear it was his life long dream to play for the Mets. These guys kill me. His life long dream was to make $17 million a year playing baseball for WHOEVER Scott Boras could get to pay that much.

Don't get me wrong he is a very good player, but $17 million a year????

yeah i know in the same breath he says he always wanted to be a met he also says i did not sign with houston because they would not give me a no trade.lol at least when we signed pedro martinez he said i wanted to finish my career as a redsock but the mets gave me more years/money.

I would much rather hear these guys say, "they gave me the most money" and not a bunch of BS. A-Rod did the same thing in taking the most money and look what happened. I'm surprised that the Mets offered a 7 year deal for that much money. You would think by now teams would have learned. If for some reason Beltran does not work out with the Mets, who will take him? Oh, that's right Georgie and the Yanks.

its like the mets go from one extreme to the next. *flash to fred wilpons office* well we tried to spend a lot of money on out of shaped end of their career under acheivers that did not work. then we tried going younger and and spending no money and that didnt work. what should we do next jeff. jeff says i think we should hire omar minaya and mix both ideas spend a ton of money on younger players and end of their career players. then we will trade for end of their career expensive players with declining numbers steroid alegations who cant get along with the freindliest manager in baseball (sammy sosa for those who dont know) oh boy now we are rollin'

but for real ya'll.. does anyone REALLY care about baseball?

yeah I DO thats why i started the thread.

i should have put a smily face, it was a joke.. but, for those who want to buy a $50 ticket to the most boring 4 hours in sports, while paying $12 bucks for a dawg and a beer, then go right ahead.

i think baseball and basketball players are in a race to see who can win the prize for the most spoiled, over paid athletes on the planet. and because of their attitude, and the lack of the respective leagues to do anything to stop it, i choose not to watch or support those sports.

but, to each their own.. and i hope your ticket prices dont go up too much..

BigJohn, although I agree that baseball games can be tough to watch, I still love it. I think many baseball, basketball and football players are overpaid and show a lack of respect for their games.

I hate watching football player make a tackle after a 6 yard gain and celebrate like they just saved the game and won the Super Bowl. It's so much "me, me, me". Are there any bigger jerks in pro sports than Randy Moss and Terrell Owens? How about Michael Vick getting over a $30 million signing bonus!

Baseball and baseketball players are not immune to this critisism. I don't watch hockey much, so I'll leave them out of this.

You will not enjoy baseball unless you understand, and enjoy, the battle between the pitcher and batter. If you don't get how the pitcher is trying to fool the batter, while the batter is trying to anticipate the pitcher, you will only enjoy the high scoring, lots of action, baseball game. A pitcher's duel can be exciting as blazes if you understand the contest.

i didnt take your comment to serious dont worry. but overpaid and spoiled could also be said about actors & musicians. but i wouldnt last 2 seconds boycotting any of them.lol

Just to clear things up, with the exception of some west coast games, I watch every inning of every Yankee game. Maybe I shouldn't have said this, now everyone will know that I am nuts!!

If you are looking purely for a lot of fast paced, high energy action, don't watch baseball. I agree, it's a lot about the strategies used between pitcher and batter, manager vs. manager. Although an occassional higher scoring affair is fun.

Let us not forget about football players, as they are cut from the same fabric. In todays society, the athletes are all the same. It is interesting to see and hear the athletes say they don't care what the fans think about them.....maybe if the fans stopped coming, their minds would change!!!

Boring??? How about watching some forms of auto racing....the fans are waiting for the accidents to put a charge into this sport.

I didn't mention auto racing, because I don't consider it a sport. Oh no, here come the NASCAR fans!!!!

i dig NASCAR.. but, i think it is definitely something that you have to actually go to the track to really appreciate. NASCAR, or any racing for that matter, is really boring on TV. same with baseball.. and i have been to a few MLB games in person, and i will have to admit, it was a good time. but, alot of that had to do with who i was with, and not necessarily the game itself. but, i will conceed that being at the park, or race, adds to the enjoyment of what you are watching.

BigJohn, I have a lot of Texas friends from my days in San Angelo, and they did convince me that going to a NASCAR race in person makes all the difference. The same can be said for hockey games. TV does not do it justice.

well if nobody else will comment on hockey players - i will. The easiest way to sum this argument up is baseball, basketball and football players are still working. Hockey players aren't - and they aren't fighting for a better dental plan. I believe it's a $1.8mil average salary. Who's more spoiled now?

Excellent point. Something to consider is that the hockey impasse is not getting great airtime in the US - with the exception of a few markets.

The NBA is watching the NHL scene VERY closely, as their CBA is up after the current season - if memory serves.

The players are at least trying to make concessions and work out a deal. The owners won't budge an inch.

Your right. I havent seen one report on it. I didnt even know there was a strike.

Let's be clear, it is a lockout, not a strike.
The players are/were prepared to play, the owners did not want to continue in the manner to which the game had become.

One thing I find funny, the players get mad and upset when "replacement players" are mentioned. Yet, they did not care one bit when they went to Europe and took other players jobs......

Both sides are to blame, the owners for giving such contracts that now strangle them, and the players for not making solid adjustments. The players recent offer was nothing more than an attempt to get the fans on their side. But while offering one time relief, in a few years the mess would be worse than it is now.

Quite honestly, after playing Junior B hockey in the mid 1980's, the game has degraded to the point where I can't watch the garbage - CALL THE RULES!!!!

I would not miss the game if they never returned!

while i do agree with you Mike that both sides are to blame, it's hard not to side with the owners. Yes salaries have gotten out of hand and yes the owners were the ones to pay the exorbitant salaries. However, they are bound to a large degree by the rules of the current CBA and LACK of a free market system. A free market system is not at all what we want anyways (as the players contend). Smaller markets, including all Canadian teams (with the exception of Toronto) would not be able to compete.

As far as i'm concerned, the best run sports league in NA is the NFL - because they have a salary cap. It appears to do a wonderful job of creating parity between the teams. When everyone can compete, it makes things much more interesting.
