I have not seen the new BG, but I have seen very little that is even close to as good as Farscape. However, you might want to check out Firefly. It's another good show from Joss Whedon (Buffy) and I highly recommend it.

Anderson wanted to semi-retire and spend less time on the set. There were only two options -- fiddle the story so he didn't need to be in every scene, or write him out completely.
I haven't been able to see any of the season 8 shows yet -- Atlantis is available on pay-per-view in Toronto but I haven't found a way to get "current" Stargate episodes. Seasons 1-7 are out on DVD so no problem there.
