The Anthony Gallo Ref 3s.
There was a local dealer that had these. If he still does in the next couple of weeks might go take a listen.

Two jokes here...

1) hey, does Axiom make wine? No, then that Gallo guy has to quit making speakers.

2) *picks up the speaker and shakes it* This is so unexpected, I'd like the thank the Academy, uh, my mom and dad, Hitler, my producer, my make-up artist...

Here they are in an owner's room. IMHO, one of the best looking rooms I've ever seen.

i just dont see how they can produce that good of a sound without any cabinets? although, i am in no way passing judgement.

i would go listen to them on curiosity factor only. i could never afford these speakers. plus, i know my wife would never allow me to have these in 'her' house.

chess,

The owner/designer of Ascend Acoustics (my speakers ) said that those Gallos were one of the best speakers he heard at 2004 CES.

This year, he said TAD (pro division of Pioneer now entering the consumer market) had the best bookshelves he has heard......$15K for the pair. I had a chance to hear them as well....incredible sound.

Who would spend 15K on bookshelf speakers?

You need to hear the speakers. They put most floorstanders I have heard to shame.

They used to give one of their surround sets away as a first prize on "Beat The Geeks". Sort of looked like skewered tennis balls.

I preferred Tiffany.

Some of the best sounding speakers that do not have a standard solid box cabinet.

The 3rd model are Vandersteens. They are clad in a fabric sock. Each driver is placed so it's 'time-aligned' and gets its own sealed enclosure.

Carefully-stacked boxes, but yeah. My uncle in El Segundo has a pair.

He does? I never really noticed a pair of speakers in that house. Must be hidden under piles of something.

The only sexy one to my eyes were the off-white clad Maggies. But I would really like to hear one of those 96db efficient Legacy Whispers (2nd & 3rd picture)with my tube amp.
kcarlile & pmbuko: I thought Vandys did not have full box enclosures? I thought it was only partial boxes and some of the boxes were open to the back. Why did they enclose it? I think it would look rather nice without the bulky looking frame with mesh.

I'd certainly prefer it without the mesh. My choice (appearance-wise) would be those enormous wood ones. I didn't realize they were open back models--how does that work with woofers? The maggies are the only ones I've heard, but for some reason I think I was thinking about the Vandersteens for some reason. Not that I ever had (or will have) the money to afford them, so that's kind of bizarre...

Sorry, I'm a bit disjointed and babbly today...

Somehow, I don't think that would help... Bottle of scotch, a dark room, and A FRIGGIN' VACATION would help. Well, mostly just the vacation.

Anyway, sorry to side track from the pretty pictures.

They're in the back room downstairs with his older stereo equipment, attached to an Adcom amp. He's also got a Vandersteen sub.
