I’m debating whether or not to get some different colored grills for the 80’s. Amie was kind enough to send me some samples. I don’t have a decorative bone in my body, so I figured maybe some of you do, or maybe your wife/girlfriend does. The black just doesn’t match the flooring and the 80’s stick out like a sore thumb. But again, I don’t have much going on for being color coordinated. So what do you think?

This is my first attempt at posting pictures, so bare with me. This might take a few tries. I'll try to post some living room pictures so you can see the color of my furniture and the rest of area.

I think either the second from the left or the middle one would work well in your room.

Mike;

What a great room!! I really like your setup. I see you got black Rotels (mine are silver). Again, congrats on your Rotel. I also read your review at the other thread and really liked it. It is as you said: Rotel has this distinct, crisp sound that I really love.

I think you should keep the black grill. You dont want it to be all matchy-matchy... Besides black matches a bit your sofa.

I think contrast is a good thing. You have enough dark things in your space to keep the black grills. Looking at the first pic, if you go to a lighter grill it will look too much like the vertical logs of the fireplace. If you can, drape the swatches over the top of the speakers so they can partly hang down the front, and then look at them. If you want the speakers to blend in with the wall, that's ok, but for my money I'd stick with black, or one of the darker colors.

yeah, but the burnt sienna can tend to look pink under certain lighting conditions. i think i'd go for the black grilles. it's better to have that contrast than to have a grille color thats close, but not quite matching that rest of the colors in the room.

Great place!!!!

I like the black.
I dont think they stick out like a sore thumb at all, but if you must change, try the center color.

Thanks all.

It's between staying black, the second from the left or the middle one, I think. I forgot to mention that I’m slightly color blind. The green doesn’t look too bad either.

The black does seem to add a contrast and go with the darker furniture. It may be the best fit. There’s a lot of surface area on the grill, so if I go much lighter, I’m thinking they will stand out even more.

No, it’s a candle on the sub next to the chair, not a plant. There’s a plant behind it though. My girlfriend has a thing for candles. I swear she’s trying to burn the house down. Dam things are everywhere.

Amie, I think I need bigger swatches. Or, I could just buy a set of each for different moods……

'Once you go black, you'll never go back!'

Another vote for the black grills Mike, I guess I'm old school.

Tropical plants in Alaska?? I'd never guessed.

I agree with most of the posters, what is wrong with the black, why does it have to match your floor. If you ask me, you have a lot of black or close to black colors in your room, those match your speakers. Contrast is good.

Anyway, it really is up to you, what makes you happy is important. It is obvious this is bugging you, other wise you would not have started a post.

good luck

Randy

Long story with the plants. Short version is I got the plants after the divorce. They're my bud's now. There's lots more too!! And where I live is on the coast. We get about 300 inches of snow a year and lot's of rain in the 'over 32' days.

I have the felts hanging off the top of the grills now. The dark green is looking pretty good, strangly enough. I think you guys are right about the contrast and black though. The green still gives the contrast, but seams to fit a little better than black or lighter colors. The lighter match the floor, but definately makes them stick out more. The greem matches my KX too!! A good excuse to keep it parked inside...lol

Wow Mike, what a great room.
I'm voting black too, unless there is a slate grey that might match the hearth on the fireplace. That might look nice.
Nice place!

Pink? I didn't see that one. If they had it, I'd buy it just to mess with people.

TV's upstairs. Not that big though, just a 46" mitsubishi.

I don't really watch much TV either. Too hard for me to sit still that long. I think I have A.D.D.

Mike, the running joke around here is if you want pink grills all you have to do is ask BigJohn. He'll set you up right!

In reply to:

Pink? I didn't see that one

i have the burnt sienna grills on my custom classic oak M60's, and in the initial pics i posted, the flash made the grills appear to have a 'pink' tint to them.. they dont, OF COURSE.. the flash was just playing tricks. but, i made the mistake of mentioning it, and it has stuck ever since. my bad..

rumor has it that i like to grope woofers and do un-natural things with gorilla ports too.... its all lies, LIES I TELL YOU!!!

I went with the slate grey. I know how some of you like pictures, so here’s some more pictures of the great room and speakers with the new grills.

*** Whoops!! Don't ask me why they are big...I haven't a clue.

What finish are your speakers? They look so very shiney and shimmery!

check the resolution or quality setting on your camera, it appears you took a few of them in super fine mode, or just edit the photo's in most imaging programs by resizing them smaller.
