Ordered on tuesday and will be receive a pair of M80ti speaker on thursday!How to warm up the speakers?

No need for a warm up.Put in your favorite music and let them rip.I've had the 80s for nearly 2 years now and they still bring a smile to my face when I fire them up.Congrats ! What will you be using to power your New M80s ?

Put them near a fireplace?

No need to warm up, as wid said. Your mind will have to get used to the sound of the new speakers, but the speakers need no breakin/warmup period to sound their best.

Well, maybe an hour or two.

Anyways, speaker break-in isn't like breaking in an engine where you have to baby anything... and (mercifully) not like breaking in a rifle barrel which is such a pain I'm thinking about not believing in break-in any more.

Play. Enjoy. You might notice the sound seems to improve over the first few hours. General consensus though is that your mind is adapting, not the speakers changing.

I received my M80s last week and just started using them. I typically don't listen to very "loud" music so I didn't bother with a break-in period.

As an interesting aside, last weekend my wife was watching a movie while I was outside working in the yard. She came out and asked why I was spraying the windows with water. Wanted to know if I was washing them.

After I asked her what the "H" she was talking about, it dawned on her that the noise was rain in the movie she was watching. The new speakers, M80s and VP-150, reproduced the rain so clearly that she thought it was real!

Sometimes fact is stranger than fiction!!!!!

I started mine out with Stevie Ray Vaughn's studio version of 'Little Wing' at around 95 db on the SPL meter, warmed 'em right up.

Thats a great one .I had a similar thing happen to me.We were watching a movie ( can't remember which one ) and it had a thunderstorm in it.Well in the middle of the storm the darn lights went out.My wife and I looked at each other like what the heck was that about.As it turns out we had a freakin thunderstorm going on the same time it was on the movie.Heck we didn't even notice the real storm till we lost the lights.

I dunno…..not letting them run a little while before pouring the coals to them bothers me from a strictly mechanical perspective. Even drivers are considered ‘moving parts’. And with any moving part, you need to work them slowly at first. Let them flex a little, then crank them.

When a person buys a new car, the break-in isn’t for the engine, it’s for the drive train (diff’s, tranny, u-joints, trans case). Engines are broke in at the factory before they’re dropped on the motor mounts. The cam is broke in (at least old flat tappet cams), rings are seated and then the oil changed. Common misconception with that one. My race builds are ready to drop in a chassis after it’s off the dyno.

Have you ever wondered how jet engines are 'broke in'?

I am certainly not going to rehash speaker breakin.I beleive what I do and that's that.

No, I've never wondered that.

I'm with you Wid on this one, as well as Alan and Ian at Axiom, speakers don't break in, it is all how your brain perceives the sound over time. 20+ years of NRC testing has proved that, and I'm going to side with the speaker manufacturer, and my personal opinion

To answer two questions:

Jet engines are often given a Green Run, and Axioms may be given a resistor.

Hey Joseph, don't worry about all this "break-in" argument.. I posted something similar with yours here when I first got my M60s and got all kinds of attacks from the oponents of "break in" concept... However, I trust my ears and my own experience, and to tell you the truth, YES, I believe that my M60 sound much better now than the first day I got them. So is the case with at least one other audio equipment i got (my Rotel RCD-1072 cd player).

I'd say, in general, don't worry about break in.

However, let's just consider the notion of environmental extremes for a second. IF the speakers have been constantly at say <50 degrees F during their multi-day shipment phase ("cold" airplanes and trucks and warehouses and such), and you then put them immediately into a >70 degree room, isn't it possible that there could be some change in the way the drivers and enclosure behave until they become acclimated to the new temperature and humidity?

Now, whether there is an audible difference or risk, that's another story

I do not believe or disbelieve in SQ differences regarding the whole speaker break in dispute. Quite frankly, I couldn’t care less.

I am suggesting to play them at moderate levels for a little while (don’t have a clue how long, but would suggest ½ hour), for mechanical considerations only. NOT FOR SQ REASONS.

Turbines are not actually broke in per say, but warmed in stages to get them through their respective critical RPM stages. Each turbine will have a particular RPM range in which they experience vibration excessive to normal operation. If they are held in the critical stage too long, catastrophic failure will be imminent. Steam turbines in particular. Gas turbines (jets) are less finicky, but experience similar conditions as steam turbines. I’ve over hauled and operated several of each. After a major over haul (like a rotor change out), they are brought up to operating speed and temp slowly. They are methodically monitored, observing and analyzing vibration data, axial movement, bearing and oil temp and auxiliary system parameters.

A good way to err on the side of caution. Allows them to adjust to the temperature, etc of your home. Ian and Alan have both stated that it only takes a second or two for everything to "break in" but I'd think at worst, it would be overly prudent to not peg the volume control within seconds of them coming out of the back of a dark brown UPS truck in the hot Arizona sun.

Good point Bren, you definately would want them to adjust to the room temperatures before cranking them up. I know a guy that ordered some Klipsch speakers once during the middle of Winter. They had been out in the delivery truck on a day when it was 40 below wind chills. He immediately hooked them up and cranked his Rotel setup. If I recall, he had to replace a few of the drivers.

You hit it just right on the gas turbine(jets)tests! Certainly in the case of the good ol' F107 and the other one, five numbers higher.

Did that once with a set of bro's poly-cone 6x9s. He didn't turn down his car stereo before parking it... I got in to start it and move it on a cojone-numbing -35C morning and heard an awful crack. He was less than impressed.

OK Rich, I'll bite. I'm quite curious to what your occupation is/was, to where you would be familiar with cruise missile delivery engines. I haven’t been privileged to lay hands on one of the ‘little’ guys, or solid fuel engines for that matter either. My experience is primarily with stationary, industrial prime movers.

sirquack- you never had an authentic moonpie? man, you dont know what you are missing. my cousins and i used to eat them by the dozen. our normal summer diet consisted of daily doses of RC coca-colas and moonpies..

The quick answer(this is OT, of course): Project Engineer-Retired. With the company and on the Cruise Missile Engine Program from first castings(1974)through first delivery to Iraq(via the Navy and Air Force)in '90. You may have heard of another of our engines-pushed a plane around the world a few weeks back-non stop and unrefeuled. This engine is also in lots of single-pilot, private twin jets. The same company that built the engine for the first-and only-real jet backpack! The company had built a stationary industrial turbine engine before I started there, but I'm afraid I wasen't involved in that one, so I haven't had any involvement at all in anything that dosen't push something through the sky.(other than a couple of APUs, also installed in aircraft)

I did have a fascinating discussion once with a few guys during off-site testing in New Jersey that were from GE,(as I recall) trying to get a contract to put their core engines from the big jets into Navy ships. I sat thru some of their testing during some spare time I had while I was waiting for the high altitude test cell where my cruise engine was to be tested was being readied, but that dosen't quite count as involvement on my part, does it?

That makes sense. I'd love to tear one of them little fellers apart, but I'm stuck with frame V's and R/R's, for the time being anyway. My employer is going with electric drivers now.....bummer. My nephew flies F117's, and I'd love get to one of those too.....but my military career was over 15 years ago.

Speaking of "little fellers" We had one little guy that you may have gotten a kick outta. A bit over 100KRPM, around 60BHP shaft(s) output, and you could hold it in One Hand! I wasen't actually on the project, but I lent them some engineering assistance in a time of need, it was fun, everything was in..... Metric! The customer was....Canada!!

F117's huh, oh wow, I could tell some stories about Lockheed and the early days of "Stealth"!!(But we dare not get into that!)

Well, before I end up saying something to get the FBI(or worse)knocking at my door, I might better want to log out now and not come back for about two weeks!!!

Please believe me, I'm not trying to sound inflammatory with this statement. But I see that you have lots of higher-end tube equipment; I see that you're into keeping your speaker cables raised above the floor; but you kept your old speakers in the cubbies on the wall? Or were they just put there for the photos?

If that's their usual location, did it cause problems? I ask because many feel that putting a speaker into a cabinet or "hollow" is one of the worst things you can do to the sound. It doesn't jibe with the rest of your setup and philosophies....

I don't think he kept them in the cabinet, the stands he has them on appear to have wheels on them. With all that tube gear hanging around it's only a matter of time til 2x6 shows up.

The JBLs in the cabinets would work much better there than Axioms because they are front ported.
I had some similar JBLs for a very long time.

There are many days where I learn more than one new thing!

I had always thought that it wasn't so much the port (which I think of as a "vent"(??!!??) but the fact that little standing waves form within there.

I could so easily be wrong again, huh?

ANY speaker in a cabinet is definitely not optimal, but if your going to do it, a front ported one works better.

In my experience and opinion.
Which also could be wrong.

The Sony TV is lame and is going to be replaced by a new HD of some sort. It will probably be a Samsung 6168.

With the picture you can see the M80s and the VP-150. I have a brand new TV stand (not in the picture) all assembled and ready for the HD. It ought to take care of the clutter on top. At least that is the plan.

How does that Kenwood 1090 VR perform with those M 80ti's I have one that I have in the spare bedroom but I haven't drug it out to see how it sound with the M 80ti's. Just curious..
