Hello,
I am not sure if this is the right section for this question ( or even the right forum even!), but since most folks in this forum seem to be level-headed audiophiles who probably won't sell their granmas just be called an 'audiophile', I thought someone here would be able to help me out.

I am seriously considering the Technics SL1210 series turntable with possibly a Shure or an Ortofon cartridge to be used as a regular hi-fi turntable. My reasons being:

1.Would be easy to procure(relatively!)in my country (India), the build quality is pretty solid (the deck seems to put up with all the 'abuse' the DJs regularly subject it to).
2.Does not seem to be 'very' expensive, considering the cost of other possible starter turntables (like the Rega, Pro-Ject).

Also, this would be my first turntable and my musical tastes vary from Classical to Thrash-metal, through Blues, Jazz, Country, Rock and Reggae.

Any ideas/suggestion greatly appreciated!

Thanks.

Cheers!

Pretty good turntable, I think. They have a long history of quality performance. I used them when I was a radio DJ 30 years ago. If I could've afforded it, I would have gotten one rather than the Stanton I have. Go for it.

And as many will tell you, the biggest upgrade you can make is the cartridge. I did a TT search recently and ended up w/ an older Pioneer PL117D for $40. I got an Ortoton OMB10 and it sounds fantastic w/ my system.
