I currently have a Yamaha 5740 with 60s, VP100, QS4s & STF-2 sub. I bought the receiver used and when it got to my house, the left side was caved in somewhat. I've often wondered if anything internally was damaged and although it seems to work ok, I've never felt 100% comfortable with it. I just bought a Denon 2105 (price seemed to be pretty good) off ebay. The yammie is rated 100wpc & the Denon 90wpc. Not a significant or noticable difference. My question is this?? Does anyone have experience with these 2 receivers? If so, is there a difference in sound quality? My mind is made up that the Denon will sound better but that may just be "mental"!! Thoughts & comments????

I know this is a quicksand issue, but I'll take a stab at it, anyway. I had a Yamaha before moving over to the D-side. I like both receivers, both are fine products. I know that an amp is an amp and there shouldn't be any difference in sound quality, but for some unknown reason I preferred certain genre's of music on the Yamaha more. Classical and jazz just seemed to be more 'right' with the Yamaha. Call me a lunatic, but that is my perception.

Appreciate the comments. Yes, both are good products and probably equal in quality. I'll probably keep the yammie for awhile and try the Denon for comparison.

That is also the perception I picked up over the years. I try not to think about it because (a) I never did any A/B testing and (b) the speakers were different as well (Yammie speakers on the Yammie receiver).

One day somebody here should actually pile up a few receivers and compare them directly. Until then, every time I see the Yamaha "look" on a receiver I think of crisp, clear jazz

We better be careful with this subject. It could easily digress into a (do amps sound different) bloodfest. I wouldn't want to witness that kind of carnage.

I was just going to throw the first punch, slip out the back door, and go to work
