I was wondering about 7 channel amplifiers/ recivers that are used with only 5 channnels, say center, 2 fronts and 2 rears.
Is there any magic in setting up the gear?
How is it done?
Are you using the surround or rear channels?

Rat, I'm currently using the 7.1 capable HK AVR635 for 5.1 only...I'm using fronts, surrounds, center and sub.
I'll eventually add the 60s as rears probably, but I'm thinking by that time a 5 channel amp will be coupled with my current 2 channel amp along with a processor. Eventually.

rat,
With most 7 channel amps, there is no way of turning off the amps that are not in use, and it is really no big deal.
With receivers and pre/pros, when setting up the speakers, you tell the system if it has 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 speaker channels in use, and it sends the appropriate signals to each. Some even allow for channels 6 and 7 to be used in a different "zone", which provides 2 channel information in to another room.

Are your surrounds in front of where you sit and listen/ watch your TV?
In my case, my speakers are in back of the couch/ recliners that we sit and watch TV.
Does your receiver have a setting for just 5.1? If so, I guess that would solve the problem.
60s as rears? That is a most interesting proposition!!!! I have been thinking about getting some QS8s and stands for the rears to replace my JBLs. But a pair of QS8s and FMS QS stands would be $770 versus $900 for the 60s. A most interesting trade.
What say the tribe? Anyone else try this?

The 60s are only $810 through the factory outlet,so that evens the price up a bit more.I would think it would sound great, but that's only one mans opinion

Hey thanks!! That would solve the problem too. I have scaned through a couple of manuals, but I did not think to look for that aspect of the setup. That is pretty slick.
I have been looking at the new Outlaw 990 pre processor introduced this past April. They also are going to introduce a new 7 channel amp identified as the 790. That combo may be what I am looking for. But, you never know, I may see something else that I like better.
I really have no good way of setting up a 7.1 system the way the room is situated. However, we will probably be moving to a lake house in a couple of years and the situation may change. So, whatever I get for new audio gear, I don't want to have to replace it, on a whim, in a couple of years.

Also Rat, I currently have both the 80s and the 60s along with the QS8. We'll be expanding a room to have it capable of incorporating all of my speakers into one package, so this is the reason for using the 60s as rears. I'm thinking the results will be worth the while!

Isn't there someone on this forum that has 5 60's or 5 80's? Or did I read that home theater would be best with the same speakers all around somewhere else?

I'm still thinking about Outlaw mono's (2) as a stepping stone. Funds keep me from the 7 channel I'd like. Maybe 2 now and a 5 at Christmas. Mono's woulg give me 7.

Ajax: at the ripe old age of 58, soon to be 59, I know what you mean. Now, what was I going to say..........? LOL!!!
On a slightly different topic this morning, I was on another chat board where one person was talking about his lights dimming when he turned on his "high powered" amp. Assuming that everything else was OK (and I'm not sure one way or another), this may be the so called current "in rush."
I know that there are simple circuits that are used to prevent this. But, are there some "cheap" add on or plug in units that also do this? No, I'm not talking about those so-called power conditioners even though they may do the job. Anyone have a link or two?

Was that a home system? Or vehicle.
I had that problem with my truck system, even with a capacitor. I had to buy a deep cycle battery.
If it's his home, then he's probably on a circuit that's already overloaded with a common neutral to the lighting circuit. That would cause the lights to dim.

It was a home system on a 20 amp circuit.
Said that he put it on another 20 amp circuit with nothing else turned on, and it did almost the same thing. Sure sounds like a current in-rush problem.
Any links to in-rush protectors?
