Hello Everyone,

I got the approval from my wife that I can get a HT system for our anniversary. My initial budget was $1000 for everything. Now my budget looks something like 3K.

I just purchased my receiver. A Pioneer vsx-1015. I already have a samsung 65 inch TV (my wife is the greatest!).

However, I am so confused by all of the different adds and information out there. I have found more positive feedback on Axiom than anything else in my price range.

My room is 15 x 15 X 9 feet high. It is connected to my kitchen which has the same dimentions and has no wall what so ever separating the rooms.

I was thinking of going with 2 m60s, 2 qs8s, a vp150 and the EP500.

In your opinions (which I value), should I even consider Swan, Aperion or Infinity?

Please help me pull the trigger on something!!!

Thank you so much for any advice you might have.

Mike

Ki-rist.. that's about the size of my home office... *looks around* if I put those in here and turned it up past 1, I'd blow out a window.

Let me be the first to get you a set of earplugs.

Is it too much even with the kitchen as part of the room? The actual size of both together (no wall separating the 2) is 30 x 15 x 9 feet high.

Thanks again.

Well, you can't "overbuy" speakers really (and I did miss the other room in the equation) and I'm not exactly the poster boy for home audio... I'm the youngest member of the curmudgeon club (Ray, Jack and F107 will you have me?) I'm past having to cave in visitors' chests with high SPLs in an effort to impress them.

My opinion - you could probably do with less, but to get any credit around here with these other guys, you'd better stick with what you're considering.

Mike, welcome. Most of us who own Axioms bought them hearing unheard and have been entirely satisfied. Probably there's nobody who's directly compared side-by-side any of those other speakers with Axioms, and that's the only sort of comparison that would be very significant. The system that you're considering should be fine as long as you're sitting a reasonable distance, say 10', from the mains.

I just measured the distance and the mains will be about 10 to 11 feet away. My couch is about 18 inches from the back wall.

Will wall mounting the sq8s be ok with the couch that close to the wall?

IMO the Epic 60 500 system will work in your room. Very similar to my initial set-up. Most of the time you will be listening at mid to low volume levels because that system will fill the room with quality sound. I play louder volumes for music when I in the attached room. In that room the 500 will rattle anything loose on the shelves, but I love the LFE's off the sub. Extremely low.

Mike, since you don't have a side wall toward the kitchen, the back wall about 6'up and separated about 12' would be a good location for the QS8s.

Due to the shape of my room, I'm stuck with surrounds on the back wall (the side-walls alternative would be one firing almost directly into a corner and one on a stand in the middle of the room) and the QSes work really well, even in that less than optimal placement.

I used to refer to my older brother (by 9 years) as "King of the over-the-hill mob." That ceased when I joined the mob. Bren, you are a most welcome member of the Axiom curmudgeon club.

mikei, I wouldn't be concerned about your speaker choice (other than paying for it, that is). The question you've asked is usually phrased "would this speaker combination be 'overkill' in my room" I'm always somewhat surprised when someone asks that question because it is my humble opinion that there is no such thing as "overkill." Now, if you asked "could I get by with less in a room this size," that's a horse of a different color.

Would you be OK with a smaller system in a room 15x15x9 (2000 cubic feet)? Sure! But I've had M60s/VP150/QS8s/HSU STF-2 in a room 11.5x18x8 (1656 cubic feet), and never felt overwhelmed. Could I have been fine with less? YUP? Was it overkill? No way, Jose!

It is also my humble opinion that "because I want it" is a perfectly legitimate reason for making ANY purchase. Enjoy!
