I'm a long way off from making a new purchase, but I've often wondered what are the pros and cons of using a a/v receiver vs. the preamp/amp set up.
I currently have an Onkyo TX-SV919THX receiver. It's getting a bit long in the tooth. So at some point it'll have to be put out to pasture.

When that day comes, I'll want the best possible set up for my HT/music tastes. I'll probably have a budget of about $2000+/- for a new rig.

I enjoy listening to every possible type of music, but the majority of my listening will be top 40, rock, and electronica. My main concern is always clarity and separation in my music. Although I use my system about 50/50 HT/Music, I'm much more concerned about how my music sounds than I am my HT. The speakers in my system are as follows:

Axiom M22ti (mains)
Axiom VP150 (center)
Hsu VTF-2 (sub)
Polk Audio LS f/x (surrounds)

So I guess my main question is simply what are the pros and cons of those two set ups, and what are some of the best models of each setup (in and around the $2000 range)

Thanks!
