oh, i just remembered this.. peter, you probably know the answer since you are right there..

i was watching a show last night on how they made and are doing upkeep on the George Washington bridge in NY city. they said the toll to cross the bridge is $6 bucks.. i thought that was kinda high.. then, i thought, i wonder what the Golden Gate toll is..? so what is it..?

not to change the subject, and maybe i am old fashion.. but i think its kind of a rip for them to charge y'all to use those bridges. its like they are forcing you to . its extortion.. sure, you dont have to use the bridge, but then you have to go 60 miles out of your way just to get to where you need to go.

You need some punishment for getting nice weather all the time....that's what the earthquakes are for. :P

GG toll is $5. All other bridges in the area are $3. You only have to pay in one direction. I don't see it as extortion. The toll money goes toward earthquake retrofits and new bridge construction. We don't want another Loma Prieta incident.

Oh, and SoCal will not fall anywhere. It's moving horizontally, not vertically, so it will eventually become an island.

I like small earthquakes. Energy released gradually = less energy stored up.

You know, I've been through countless earthquakes in CA, but this was the first time I was sitting on the toilet when it hit. I was waiting for the shower to warm up, and with the water running I didn't hear a thing. Just happily sat there playing electronic yahtzee (I hadn't gone outside to get the newspaper yet), and I thought, "Man, I need to tighten the bolts down on this toilet." No, just a moderate earthquake rolling through. I looked outside and saw the pool water sloshing around. The cats went kinda bonkers--they looked at me with their saucer eyes, "Holy s*#@ , what the hell was that?"

Yes, I have talking cats.

Pools and chandeliers are the best earthquake indicators.

This happened right in BigWill's neck of the woods, incidentally.

St_PatGuy, what time of day do you get up? That quake hit at almost 2pm! Work swing?

This quake was a nice sharp one in my area. Started pretty forcefully, like a big one, but slowed down after about 5 seconds. Had us panicked though - the baby was napping upstairs while we were downstairs watching "The Aviator". Neither of us liked being separated from the baby.
BTW, Tom did you get to experience the other quake that hit your sister's area last weekend?
And Yucaipa is NOT my neck of the woods (sniff, sniff). I live in Corona, which is practically Orange County!

Oh yeah, I was there last weekend for the other quake. Just sitting at the kitchen table at my sister's. I knew immediately what it was. Waited for a few seconds before bolting for the doorway, just to see if it meant business. Of course, by the time I got to a safer place, it was over.

We had a 6.8 here in the Puget Sound area in 2001. There was quite a bit of damage. It was scary because it went on for a REALLY long time (~40 seconds). The really scary part was trying to ascertain whether the rest of my family was OK; roads, telephone lines and cellular service were are kaput immediately afterwards.

Staci was at her mom's house for the big Whittier earthquake in '87. The house was a mile or two from the epicenter, so it was pretty intense and caused a lot of damage.
I reckon that's why she was a little freaked out yesterday.

I was wathcing a Discovery Channel program a few weeks back about potential disaster areas for major earthquakes and Seattle/Puget Sound was high on the list, especially because of the outdated infrastructure of highways, bridges, and buildings. Add to that Seattle sits on a former mud flow from Mt. Ranier, and if it were to erupt...

Here's hoping to it being far away from our lifetimes.

I will stick with the potential of being hit by falling ice or windows from skyscrapers here in Chicago

cause there is nothing that says "hometown" like having your face ripped off by a razor sharp piece of glass, falling from a 60 story skyscraper...

Yeah, well, doom and gloom. What are you gonna do? It seems to me that those kinds of programs try to paint the worst possible scenario. While there is a fair amount of risk due to long-term creativity exhibited by waterfront developers, I don't think that whole "mud flow" thing should be taken at face value.

Seattle is not the only city built on fill, and much of this region sits high on granite.

I saw there was another big quake off the N CA coast last night. I didn't see a tsunami warning from Mexico to Alaska this time, though.

Seattle is really not at risk from Mt. Rainier, although the Orting valley could be buried by a mud flow sometime in the next 500 years or so. Or not. I have a friend that lives in Port Orchard (on the other side of Puget Sound) and spends a fortune to commute, primarily due to that prospect. Nuts.

To be fair, this region is fairly immune to natural disasters in general. We don't have tornados, hurricanes, urban flooding, large hail, drought, locusts, poisonous snakes, expensive mudslides, tumbleweeds, or extreme heat. It only froze about two days last winter, and it only snowed once. I've got a 14000' mountain an hour east, the Pacific Ocean an hour-and-a-half west and Puget Sound practically at my doorstep. It's home.

I mean, nobody likes the prospect of catastrophic earthquakes but it's one of those problems you can't do anything about, so you just have to change the way you think about it. Of course, it doesn't hurt that my house is above the city of Puyallup's 500-year flood-plain line on the map

you forgot killer bees.. the africanized kind..

we have had 4 deaths in the past 2 years from attacks by killer bees in this area. and several attacks where people got stung multiple times, but survived.

i am so paranoid, if i see more than 4-5 bees hovering around the same place, i just leave the area. from what i understand.. if you kill one, or disturb one, they put out a pheramone that alerts the rest of the hive, and here they come. and you cant just jump in water, cause they will wait for you to come up for air.. smart little bastards..

When I first read the post I thought it referred to the quake on Sunday morning. For some reason I didn't feel the one yesterday afternoon! I didn't have the tv on, so didn't see the barrage of newscasts and didn't realize we just had another one. If I remember I was just sitting reading a book yesterday at 1:30--2:00. That's when it hit, right? The more I think about it, the more it bugs me that I completely missed the entire thing. I could understand if I was driving around, but I was lounging around the house!?

btw...re: "killer" bees. Four deaths over two years if far from a major concern, no? More people likely die from choking on beef in Texas in a two year period. Are you afraid to eat steak?

Oh wait. . .

We're at my parents' house in Southern California this week, so we felt the Earthquake yesterday. My wife and I were in the living room, and we looked at each other and said, "Earthquake!" Things were shaking, etc., and my mom walks out of the kitchen and says something totally out of the blue. We looked at her and said, "We just had an earthquake!" She didn't feel it at all...

I guess we get a little spoiled down here. Usually I sleep through them, the ones that happen at night. First time I missed one in the day.

I spent tons of time on the west coast during the '60s and can't say as I ever felt a quake(that I recall) The only one I ever noticed was in...Michigan!!!

Quakes though are kinder than Hurricanes! Or...

"What the hell with all those hurricanes lately"

During hurricanes you feel obligated to pack up and take your speakers if you have to evacuate!(Like We Had TO THREE Times Last Year!!!)!! With quakes....there's No Warning!

I for one would gladly trade the current 95 Degrees temps and 90 percent humidity here for a few earthquakes and cooler temps! I cant wait for summer to officially start!!
