Your options depend on what you have currently. Some systems require more effort than others. If you have the Bose setup that's becoming popular you'll need a new amp. If you want to blast away on the freeway with the windows down, you'll likely need a new amp for that too. However, simply replacing the paper speakers you likely have will probably help quite a bit.

I replaced the speakers in one of my cars with very good results. I'm sure replacing the deck would yield further improvements too, but IMHO replacing the speakers was money well spent.

FWIW, I have a $6500 Dynaudio/McIntosh system installed in my car. The system has actually made it on TV and in print.
But here's my point: It sounds like god when you're sitting still.
Once underway, it still sounds great, but the road noise causes so many problems with phase cancellation that you lose a LOT of fidelity. The entire car is dynamat'ed and the sub is isolated.
My advice, having gone thru this now, is I would throw some decent Pioneer or low-end Focal components in there, a mid-quality deck, and be done w/ it. Just my 2c.

I'm not expecting perfect, or even great (or even good?) sound. I have a stock tape deck in a 10 year old Pathfinder. Wind noise, tire noise, rattling of various parts is awful. There's no way I'm spending more than a couple hundred on everything, as there's no way I can really get the acoustics in good shape. I just want dirt cheap and "not total crap."
Of course, since I don't have a CD player, I'd probably end up getting a cheap CD receiver to go with it.
Would it make more sense (sound a lot better?) if I just got a new receiver instead?
