Fellow audiophile's: I recently purchased a Yamaha RXV-2500 for a great price, and would like a straight answer on wether the 6-8 ohm Yamaha will power the 4 ohm M80's. If not, I will settle for the M60's which are 8 ohms. Any help you can provide would be appreciated.

I think it would probably work, but given the choice between M80s and no sub vs M60s and a sub, I'll take the M60+sub combo. Also the sub offloads your receiver, making any power issues far less likely.

Don't feel you would be settling for M60's as they are awesome speakers. They are very similar in detail and efficiency of the M80's, it is just the M80's can handle more juice. Overall, I think there are more M60 owners here then M80's, I'm sure someone will prove me wrong

The Yammy is a fabulous receiver, I almost bought its younger brother the 1400, but ended up with the Denon 2805. I'm sure someone will chime in here and give you the scoop. It is my understanding that Axiom recommends Denon or HK or Seperates to drive the 80's.

ps: how big is your room and is this for HT or music mainly or both. I have a 900 Sq Ft room I use my 60's in and no problem..

Pain, welcome. If by a "straight" answer you mean one that would apply in all possible circumstances, nobody can give you that. It isn't simply a case of a given amp and a given speaker; the distance of the listener, the size of the room, the dynamic range of the music being played, and the average sound level someone chooses to listen at are some of the variables. The 2500 isn't a "6-8" ohm receiver except in the owners manual(the common warning due primarily to legal liability questions). In the real world it puts out well over 100 watts per channel into 4 ohms. Keep in mind that at a comfortably loud average level speakers such as the M60 and M80 will be using about 1 watt,while brief split-second peaks might use 100 watts or more, depending on the factors mentioned above. In my view the 2500/M80 combination would be fine in most circumstances, but "most" may or may not include your circumstances.

Current setup:

Samsung 61inch DLP
Yamaha RXV-2500
Sony DVP CX-985V 400 Disc Pro Scan DVD/SACD/CD player
Bose Acoustimass 15 with 501's

I have been unimpressed with the Bose in that sized room, so they will go into my bedroom home theater system and I will purchase some axioms.

Planning on purchasing:

Axiom M80ti's vs M60's (depending on posts here on compatibility with reciever RXV-2500)
Axiom QS8's
Axiom VP150
SVS PB-12-ISD Subwoofer (will be getting this regardless of wether I get 80's or 60's).

I am currently stationed in South Korea, but am going back to the motherland in the next 2 weeks. Would like to order soon.....Any help is greatly appreciated.

I really think that you would do great with the M60s in a room that size, and think that you would find they are really no compromise in your needs.
Both are great speakers... the M80s just play louder in a very large room (larger than yours). As John said, the Yamaha would probably be OK with the M80s under most circumstances, but why take that chance if the M60s are 98% as good as the M80s in all but gigantic rooms?

Pain, your player, TV and receiver are excellent. You certainly will have a substantial improvement with either the M60s or M80s. Your room isn't so big that you need the M80s and you might find almost no difference from the M60s, especially since you'll be using that sub for the lowest bass.

Relative to your current setup, you will be amazed at the sound from the Axiom speakers and SVS sub. Regardless of M80 vs M60, you have many happy hours of enjoyment ahead of you. Either one will sound great.
