I'm looking for a cheap 6.1 surround sound system. The ceiling is exposed so I want 3 rear ceiling speakers, 3 front speakers, 1 sub, + and a receiver. My budget is low. The room is 12 x 22. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible to match the rear with the front speakers. I'm looking to spend around 500-600 if possible, if not I will build piece by piece. I want to put in the ceiling speakers while it is exposed. All help appreciated!!

It is going to bo tough to build a 6.1 system with USD 500-600, unless you are talking about 500K-600K here

The advice you'll get here is...do it a piece at a time instead. In the long run, you'll be happier. Start with a receiver and two front speakers. When you can afford it get a sub, center, and surrounds, in whatever order suits you best.

In the home I had built, I had the surround speaker wires prewired for the ceiling. It didnt work out as well as having the speakers at the side of the listener. Maybe you can find some research that bears this out. I've moved now and have my surrounds at the side and it is much more realistic when watching a movie.

CC, welcome. Frankly, what you propose doesn't appear to be very practical. In-ceiling speakers generally don't work especially well, although there're some rather expensive ones designed for that use which are reasonably good. Unless it's absolutely essential, a different arrangement, possibly including small speakers suspended from the ceiling on brackets, should be considered.
If you don't want to start out with a 2.1 system(of better quality)and then expand it as the budget permits, then yes, it certainly is possible to suggest for you a reasonably good setup for about $600, but not in-ceiling.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

In ceiling speakers just do not have the same sound as regular box speakers. I would not recommend going in that direction also. Save up a little longer and get a system for about $1500 and then you should be able to experience movies in a whole new light errr sound.
