Question: Will a copy of a DVD (ie: ripped / burned ) play at 1080P via HDMI ? or does the player / spec only play original retail studio released media and nothing else ?

I believe that it will behave exactly as a non-copied DVD would. If you have an upconverting DVD player it would work the same algorithms on the picture of the burned DVD as it would the normal DVD. If it isn't upconverting, then your TV would attempt to scale it like it does with a normal DVD.

If you're talking about an otherwise downloaded movie, you would probably not see anything great. I know when I watch downloaded TV shows or movies streamed to my xbox 360 it doesn't look 1080p by any stretch...or really 480p in most cases.

I hope that helps, anyone can correct me if I'm misunderstanding the question

I need to clarify my original question, as I fear I have confused even myself

A: will a standard def DVD copy play on a BD player via HDMI ?
B: will a High Def copy of a BD disk play at high def res on a BD player via HMDI ?

Basically, does the HDMI "HDCP copy protection" know when you are playing a copy of a disc, be it standard def or high def, and prevent you from viewing that disc content.

A: Yes
B: Yes

If the copy has ripped off the protection, it will look like a homemade video (HD or not) done with a video camera and they burnt on disk.

Usually, disk rippers does remove the copy protection information (i.e. does not record it back after having broken it and accessed the content).

Merci Eric !

That's what I wanted to know.. I currently don't have a BD Player but I'm saving my cash for the upcoming Oppo.. only problem is I don't have HDMI on my TV, only component and I don't have HDMI on my pre/pro.. only analog .. so I'll be connecting the Oppo via analog to my pre/pro and from what I understand, this will give me full lossless audio ie: dolby TrueHD etc.. cause the Oppo will decode..but I will be limited to 1080i via component..
