I have speakers outside by my pool, but no wires running to them. How can I get the signal to them from my Yamaha receiver without running wires? Will I need another receiver to power them?

recently saw a very small set of wireless speakers sold by brookstone. i was told a wired card was plugged into the headphone jack which acted as a transmitter and powered the speakers. sounded pretty crappy when turned up much over a speaking level. other than that wires are a must for those guys out by the pool i would think.

Hi,

You would have to use some variation on an FM modulator, which would be a small low-powered FM transmitter plugged into the headphone output of your indoor Yamaha. Then you'd need the FM receiver at the other end, plus an amplifier to drive the speakers.

In the end, that seems more complicated than just running some speaker cables out to the speakers.

I went the FM transmitter route to get music into my backyard, but I use a "boombox" instead of dedicated speakers out there.

Peter,

Good idea. I just attended a Tivoli Audio press conference, and to demo the sensitivity of a new Tivoli Audio portable radio, they used this tiny little transmitter, only a couple of inches long, plugged into the headphone output of an iPod, which transmitted the MP3 stuff to the Tivoli portable at the other end of a fairly large banquet room in a hotel. I think that Apple sells this accessory for the iPod.

Regards,

There are actually a few of them; the iTrip, a Monster one, a Dr. Bott one, a Gefen one (I believe), etc. You can get most of them through Apple's online store, CompUSA, or one of the Apple Stores. Of course, your friendly neighborhood VAR would appreciate a visit, too!

Unfortunately, most of these are specific to the iPod, so you'd probably need something more like Peter has to do this. (not to mention that they're fairly low powered)

My transmitter is actually strong enough to cover a large chunk of my block. I tested it by driving around my neighborhood with the radio tuned to my frequency. I wanted to make damn sure my signal would be strong.

Of course, this is probably not kosher, but I make sure to pick a frequency far from other stations.
