Has anyone built their own sub? I'm trying to get some feedback on which drivers and amp to use. I'm good with wood, so that not an issue.

I'm happy to hear you have no issues with your wood. I'm pretty good with wood too.

After doing some home work. I think it would be a waste of time. After buying all the parts not including my time, I could go out and buy an SVS or HSU.
My wife likes how good I am with wood ![]() Tom

Tleigh,
I currently have an HSU VTF-2 that is great sub, but I wanted a sealed design for music only. So I bought the Titanic MK3 12" (295-404) and the 500wt. plate amp (300-404)from Parts Express. I then built a 2.4ft^3 cab out of 1" MDF, finished it in a adhesive backed Teak veneer, high gloss laquer, and it is a beaut. The sound is very tight and quick, the F3 point is 28Hz. and the F10 is around 20. It keeps up quite nicely with the HSU, and the amp has a built in Parametric EQ. to tame those wierd room problems. Plus you can say "I built it" Adire Audio also has some great products. Whatever your decision, good luck.

I was drooling at the Tumult subwoofer. I would try ether a sealed or Passive Radiator design. The box would be 2 to three cubic feet. I would also look at an external amp such as qsc rmx1450. Just a thought

I've been building speakers (mostly subs) for over 10 years now... I'm about to embark on my latest adventure for my new HT. I wouldn't mind something from SVS but I don't have 500+ bucks right now so I'm going to take the drivers I currently have and build something cool.
For me half the benifit is the designing and building, makes hearing it even more benifical since I know I created it. If its your first time I'd simply recommend just picking out some cheap woofers, nothing fancy. Just try to build something for ~50-100 bucks and see if you enjoy it and can get a sound out of it that you like. Then down the road for a serious sub you could buy quality drivers or just get something from a company like SVS etc. |
