I think Mike is right; the idea, as with carpet spikes, is to physically couple the speaker enclosure to the much larger mass of the floor, helping to ensure that a higher percentage of the energy sent to the drivers actually is transmitted instead of transferred. Another consideration is height - the rubber feet that come with Axiom speakers are ~1" tall, which *could* make a discernable difference, depending upon your room and listening position.
