Chess,
Can you figure out for us what the minimum size room should be if one is sitting 8 feet away from the fronts?

Chess,Can you figure out for us what the minimum size room should be if one is sitting 8 feet away from the fronts? Thanks for the math problem. Sadly, I've nothing better to do on a Sunday morning. The answer is that the rear wall has to be at least 17.86 feet wide to enable you to be 8' away from your front speakers. Room length is irrelevant in the equation as all formulae are based on width, not length. Given that you want to sit 8' away, the minimum room size by this rule is 17.86' x 8'. Seems to be a missing component in the golden rule if you're able to sit against your back wall and call that ideal. (though I guess this only is a reference for a stereo setup, so maybe it'd work)

Thanks. The minimum length is probably something like 3 times the distance away from the speakers which would make the room 24' long.
They should give practical problems like these to kids in school.

They should give practical problems like these to kids in school. They do. If a train left Chicago traveling at the golden ratio of 0.276 units from the station and another train left Denver traveling on a perpendicular course at .447 units from the station, when will the two trains intersect at the point to HEAR the crash in perfect stereo?

Jason, It really would be a shame to find the perfect sub only to have it sound terrible due to the dimensions of your room. I think it's time to rip your basement apart .

If you examine the map, they would intersect in an unpopulated forest and no one would hear the sound .
