Are you a home brewer too? How do you like your Macbook Pro hooked up to that TV? Mine sux as I have an RPTV so the gets cut off and the type can be hard to read. My next tv is going to be a flat panel. Have you adjusted the overscan checkbox under the display preferences?

That's pretty much a dream system there. What kind of TV stand / entertainment unit is that? I like how it saves you from drilling into a wall. A friend of ours in Waterloo had a similar entertainment unit, tv up top against a wood 'wall' background with the components underneath and a ledge created under the tv for plant decor and family pictures. It cost them over 4 grand and the thing was rather large. Needed a longer living room to accommodate its width into the room. This unit pictured looks alot shorter though. I love the concept.

It's custom made, but in the last couple months I've seen similar units from furniture companies. With the huge sales of HDTVs, we'll certainly see more of those. In my previous house, my flat panel display was hung on the wall and while in theory it was nice, it wasn't that great in practice. Obviously drilling but also the fact that wires were difficult to hide, even with loom and paint. It's not a factor when you build from scratch your home theater in your unfinished basement, but when you live in a condo, you don't necessarily want to open your walls and start wiring everything.

Sure I can see everything, but it's a smaller image.

Very stunning! Either you don't have kids or they are very well trained, I can't keep any room in my house that clean looking for more than 10 minutes.

AFAICT the lid-close trick helps a bit, but I've yet to get mine to exactly fill the screen -- at least when using DVI -> HDMI. Try your VGA adapter -- I've read that my 1080p Samsung only actually accepts 1080p via the VGA input (grrr - HDMI is 1080i). Is yours a 15" MBP? I wonder if the 17" would do better.

Doubt it. They use the same video chip, essentially. What resolution are you guys using?

Is yours a 15" MBP? I wonder if the 17" would do better. They're the same, anyway it's not the MacBook that's in cause, it's always the HDTV and it's HDMI/DVI compatibility woes. Most HDTVs VGA input will work great with PCs & Macs, it's with the HDMI inputs that things get complicated. Most high-end TVs will do just fine (XBRs / Kuros), but it was a challenge to find a mid-range TV with flawless HDMI 1080p support for computers. My 2006 Samsung LN-S4051D manual mentioned that PCs were supported only through VGA, I tried it in HDMI and while I had a good PQ, overscan was inevitable and I got back to VGA even if PQ was not as good. If you don't want to invest in a new TV, your best bet is to first try VGA if it works. If it's not working as expected, use the TV-Out Component dongle that came with your videocard, the vcard will output in a format that the TV accepts and you should be fine although PQ will not be as good. Finally, you can also take a look at the new videocards which sport HDMI output, like the Radeon 4850/4870 or the GeForce 9800GTX+. FYI, my MBP is the C2D 2.16GHz 15.4" model w/128MB vRAM (ATI X1600). It's hooked to the TV via a DVI->HDMI cable and at 1920x1080p resolution. When the TV is set at "Full Pixel" display mode, I get a full image without any cropping.

For my Samsung HLR-6178W, PQ and sync are notably worse using the VGA input over the DVI/HDMI (useful largely for playing ITMS video). use the TV-Out Component dongle that came with your videocard What video card? What component dongle? Finally, you can also take a look at the new videocards which sport HDMI output, like the Radeon 4850/4870 or the GeForce 9800GTX+ .. and use them on an MBP? You have the "full pixel" mode on your LN-S4051D? As far as I can tell my 2005 Samsung lacks such a mode. Grrrrr. I bought at the higher end hoping that I'd be able to future-proof -- looks like that didn't work out.

it's with the HDMI inputs that things get complicated. Thats funny. On my Sony A2020 HDMI is the only connector I can do 1080p over. My onboard graphics (based on the Radion 1250 chipset) puts out hdmi at 1080 just fine. I had to set underscan to 2 or 3% on the TV to get a full screen image. I believe that the latest AMD cards (mentioned above) will also pass HD audio over HDMI. I read a review either on Toms Hardware or Anandtech. Oops, not quite. From Anandtech: "We still don't have support for bitstreaming TrueHD/DTS-HD MA and most likely won't anytime this year from a GPU alone, but there are some other solutions in the works for 2008." Only 8 channel lpcm (still an improvement). Looks like I won't be upgrading to Bluray this year.
