Not really a "mistake", but let your subs handle the lowest bass and relieve your mains of part of the bass load, so don't set them "large" in any case, regardless of how big they may be. Yes, the receiver handles the crossover when speakers are set "small" and you get the sub crossover bypassed or set all the way up.
