 Whole house audio - setting up multiple speakers

Helping inlaws w/ a whole house audio system. I'm going to start w/ a single source/multi zone solution first.
My problem is trying to understand how to run multiple pairs of speakers in one room. Any suggestions on amps w/ diagrams that can get me started on how to understand this?
