Will they work, yes, is it ideal, not really. You may have to expand on your "recesses". You don't want to put them into some enclosure or bump in area. The bass ports on the back filter low frequencies into the room, restricting this restricts the performance. Most of us probably have about 5-12"+ of space between them and the wall.
