Whenever I built our room one consideration for the rear surrounds was placing a pair of M60s in two recessed areas of the back wall and I asked Alan if there would have been any negative SQ drawbacks by doing so, he told me as long as there were a few clean inches to the back, top and sides there wouldn't be any problems at all ... and I even asked if the same holds true if they were used as mains and he told me yep, no problems.
