Worth giving Axiom a call, certainly. You're Ian's buddy, so that shouldn't be an issue, right? ;\)

I don't recall anyone ever getting Axioms without grill holes, other than the Audiobytes, which use magnetic grills. Not sure if the MDF comes predrilled, or what, but I can't imagine that it would be.
