Custom little button ads are hard to get rid of because they are specific to the site. But AB+ should remove any global ad networks automatically. You can write custom rules to block what ever you want, but that's not so easy.
The default should have gotten you the EasyList subscription, I like to add to that EasyPrivacy (blocks tracking cookies). See
http://easylist.adblockplus.org/ look on the left-hand side, click the #2 link to Add EasyPrivacy.
You probably don't like the serif font, look in the preferences dialog box for the Content section and change the Default Font to sans-serif.
