Hi,
My room is 12x28. I sit at 14 foots from the wall so there a 12 foot space behind my seating position. Is the back wall to far away for back surround duty?
If not, what kind of speakers will serve me best in that situation (direct or di/biole)?

My room is exactly the same size as yours and I have M2s as back surround speakers and they work fine. In fact, given the seating position and the distance, back surround speakers are an excellent candidate from which benefits of having them are probably more advantageous then a smaller room where you are sitting closer to the back wall. They fill in that space better than not having them.
Of course, make sure you have them balanced properly with the others.
