I see your point, especially since in my case the 3rd sub would end up being disproportionately placed compared to the others. It would end up significantly closer to the listening spot than the other two subs. and thus muddy things. My mind was stuck on the "room mode" issue where you can actually even out the peaks and the nulls in a room by adding more subs, but that is taking them into more of an "even distribution around the room" situation, which this wouldn't be.
