Go here and download the MX Editor software, the MX Editor Programming Manual, and the MX Editor Tutorial. Go through the tutorial, read the manual, and then start playing with the software. Once you get the hang of the software, it gets relatively easy.

The idea is to create a configuration you like, and then download it to the remote. So, you don't need the remote to create your setup. If you make a mistake, you can delete the file and start a new one. No big deal. You'll learn a lot just from playing with the software.
