If you only have drywall and strapping I would want to see at least a couple of bolts going right into the concrete. I think your friend is absolutely correct that the fasteners will handle 90 pounds each as long as the pull is straight down.

Now... mount one of those puppies in the middle of the drywall between two furring strips (the drywall is glued to the furring, right ?) and pull straight out. Bet it won't take 90 pounds to rip through the drywall....

I guess if the TV were mounted REALLY close to the drywall so that there was essentially no outward force it could work with just fasteners but I sure wouldn't do it myself.
