I'm leaning towards buying my new Axioms in black, as the furniture in my room is already a variety of different colors. Does anyone recommend avoiding black for any reason?

I don't think there's any reason to avoid black... generally we go for the wood-like finishes to put some colour in the room or to match some furniture already in the room.
If you look at the wall 'o fame there are a fair number of black speakers there so some people are definitely buying 'em :

Black goes with everything. You get a specific wood-like finish (light or dark), and you can end up locked into that type of finish for the rest of your decor. There are good things and bad things about any "color," but black is as close as your gonna get to a "universal" finish.
There is no reason to avoid any particular finish. The important thing is to get what YOU like. If you don't find black "boring," then, by all means, get it. If you like cherry, then, by all means, get that. After all, who's going to be looking at these speakers the most.

Okay, you guys. I don't want to seem insensitive. There is nothing wrong with black. Like everything, it comes down to preferences. Get what you want and what you think will look best in your room. If you're still unsure, give Axiom a call and have them ship some samples to you. That way you can see exactly how different colors interact with your decor. Remember to look at them in different light conditions and from varying distances. Some woods have a nice grain up close, but from far away the detail disappears. Experiment and find what you like.
