The manual that comes with your new receiver will tell you all you need to know about how to hook up cables.
To get DD or DTS processing from you receiver, you can either use an optical cable (Toslink) or a digital coaxial cable from your dvd to your reciever. Any brand will do.

Spend 20$ and get a fiber optic cable. There is absolutely no signal loss, and will allow you to get the best sound possible.

Actually, the fiber is not timed, whereas the coax is. This is no problem with DVDs, as I understand it, but it can be with CDs. It's subtle, though. And IT'S ALL DIGITAL... It's 1010010010101101111010111011. It doesn't take much to transmit that.... Now that I've argued two different ways, it also depends on your components. For example, my DVD player doesn't have optical out.

Does not matter. Both connection methods transmit the digital language with 100% fidelity -- if it does not, something is seriously broken.
