OK, I just bought a new house which I am moving into in the next couple of days. I have a 20x30x9' room . This is what I am getting this week.
ONKYO TX-NR900
2 - M80ti
4 - QS-8
1 - VP150
1 - SVS 20-39 PCi
Top of the line 14G speaker wire from Lowes 250' $42 - this is supposed to be funny
Need to:
Get meter from Radio shack
Figure out how to setup. Any recomendation on where all my speakers go. I know I have to listen and see how I like it, But I would like a starting point.
How high up should my surround speakers go?
Should 2 go on the back wall or maybe all on the side wallls. One corner of the back walls have sliding glass doors, so if on back wall that would need to ba at least 7'in on that side.
I still have not picked out a TV yet but was thinking of the new sony 42" 16:9 TV I would like to not spend much over 2K for a TV
I would like to run the speaker wires Wednesday before my speakers arrive if I can figure out about where they go. I am wanting to hook this thing up ASAP

Zeb,looks like a fine system for your rather large room. I'll give some positioning rules of thumb(although there's acoustical reasons behind them). Put the sub in one of the corners behind the M80s(possibly the one farther from a doorway or other opening).

The M80 woofers should be at unequal distances from the floor and two nearest walls and probably at least 3 feet from the wall behind. They should be separated a distance about equal to the distance of your seat or a little bit less and toed in so that the tweeters point at your ears.

The VP150 would be either directly above or below the TV screen and possibly tilted slightly so that the tweeters point at ear level.

The common suggestion for surround speaker height is about 3 feet above ear level, but that isn't critical, especially with QSs. The side surrounds should be on the side wall about opposite to or slightly in front of the listening position. The back surrounds should be on the back wall separated about the same distance as the distance of the seating from the back wall.

Enjoy the music, not the equipment.

zebulun,

Instead of (or in addition to) a direct-view TV, have you considered a front projector? See my previous post here for some rationale...

Couldn't help throwing in my usual blurb...
