You really have lots of options, it probably depends on your budget. If you stay with name brands like Onkyo, Denon, HK, etc... you will be fine. Personally, I love my Denon/Axiom combination.

There is a lot of good talk about the HK 635.

After working with my friend's 3805 this weekend, I will say that the H/Ks seem much easier to understand, at least as far as knowing what's going to happen when you put in this type of disc or use that input. Also, the Denon remote stinks on ice. The H/K remote merely stinks. But at least you can see the buttons in daylight and there's discreet buttons for each of the surround modes.

Wow, so you're saying the Denon user experience sucks even more than the HK ? As an HK owner I find that hard to believe
Swirvin, there are a whole bunch of good receivers on the market. A good place to start would be the Pioneer 1015, which I think is about $400-$500 up here and is reported to be very solid and capable. HKs are pretty expensive in Canada unless you wait for the sales. Regular price at Futureshop etc... for HK is WAY too high compared to US.

I would have to agree with Bridgeman's recommendation of a Pioneer 1015. I have one myself and although I feel the power is just adequate the processing is excellent. I plan on adding an external amp later on but for now it works just fine and I'm sure would for you as well.

I noticed earlier this week that the Costco store in Oakville, ON has the HK DPR-1005 for $799 and the Denon AVR-1705 for $399.
