Ron, Peter's similar recent quest should be of interest, especially the Panasonic PV-GS150.

As John mentioned, I recently researched camcorders. Like you, I didn't need bells and whistles. In your price range, I'd get the PV-GS150 or PV-GS250. I got the PV-GS65, their least expensive three CCD camcorder. The video and audio quality are excellent and low-light performance is much better than I expected.
Before you buy, make sure you go to a circuit city or best buy and pick one up to make sure you like how it fits in your hand.
The sites I used to research were http://www.cancorderinfo.com and http://www.dvspot.com.
Beware of "too good to be true" prices if looking at online stores. There are many bait-and-switch vendors out there who will only give you the low advertised prices if you also buy a bunch of overprices accessories. I was very happy with http://www.dbuys.com.

I tried both Samsung and JVC before ending up with a Sony that is Far superior to the other two. Not much of a comparison I know but the Sony's pic quality, in the same price range, was SO MUCH better.
Sony is known for too many propriatary things though.

I've always been partial to JVC. My first VHS-C JVC camcorder is still working like a champ. We just recently bought a new Mini DVD Jvc and it works great. I like the 16:9 feature

Hi!
Check the following link, CNET's reviews are usually bang-on:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Camcorders/4521-6530_7-5021303-1.html?tag=dir
Personally, I would go for this one:
http://reviews.cnet.com/Panasonic_PV_GS250/4505-6500_7-31267070-2.html?tag=sub
You would probably be able to pick it up for much lesser than the price listed on the page. The Panny's choc-a-block with features and the video quality is quite something.
Cheers!
