I am interested in learning more about the X-10 protocol.
I am aware of some sites already Smarthome is particularly good, it seems.
Does anyone have suggestions for user groups or other places to learn? Other places to shop (I see quite a bit of stuff on Ebay)?
Words of wisdom?
What about that Insteon protocol that Smarthome is so keen on?
TIA.

Hey Tom,
I've used Smarthome, and HomeAutomationNet.Com. On some items one has the better price; on some the other place has the better price. For example, Smarthome has the IR-543 controller, which allows me to use my MX-850 remote to control my lights, for $30. HomeAutomation has it for $20.
I recommend using either source to find the item(s) that interest you, and then doing a google search to find the best price on each item. Ray did this and came up with a site that was closing out it's inventory, and we got some controllers for something like $3 apiece.

I've ordered from X-10 before. They're a good company, with pretty darn good prices over all. I purchased my Belkin Pure AV PF60 powercenter from them, and I really love it.
When searching for best prices, I generally use pricegrabber.com or shopping.com
Hope that helps a little. Good luck.

Tom,
Get a little creative and you'll be surprised at how neat X-10 is. Wall switches, wall sockets, plug-in modules, timers - very nice.
I think Jack and I got the controllers from Stanley. Might be worthwhile to see if they have any left. I got enough to put in 6 rooms.
Remote Central has the X-10 files for the MX-700 as well.

There's no challenge in it.

Yeah...that was too easy. If there's no challenge, where's the joy in it?

If you guys think there's no joy in it, you're doing it wrong.
