Personally, I think the Radioshack SPL Meter is a must. At least for me, calibrating your sub level is difficult by ear. In addition, if you felt inclined, you can measure your in-room frequency response using the SPL Meter.
As far as Avia, I found it useful. However, many find their receiver subwoofer tones adequate.
