Hello,

I was wondering what people's thoughts are regarding the typical CD lens cleaners. My cdp seems to need a cleaning.
Most that I've seen have brushes on the disc that's used to clean the lens.

I've read some saying that this is perfectly fine, while others have said that these brushes scratch the lens.

Any opinions on this? Any recommendations for cleaning if these disc are not a wise choice?

Thanks.

If your not having problems with your player, for ex. skipping, then I would not worry about it much. I did however pick up a discwasher cd/dvd cleaner that has the brushes from Walmart for an old Toshiba DVD player I had, it did seem to improve the skipping problem I was having... As far as I know it will not hurt the laser lens, it will however brush off any dust that has collected.

Easier, more effective and safer way is just to unplug the player, remove the 2-6 screws that hold the top on, the laser is right out in the open, use a laser-safe cleaning solution or Everclear works very well if 190 proof alcohol is legal where you live (also good for making liqueurs and burning in camp stoves if you don't like the naptha taste on your bacon and eggs)... isopropryl at 70% w/v is NOT recommended.

If you have to use a Q-tip, cover the end of it in a lint-free cloth first (the satiny ones they give you at eyewear places work very well)

Clean lens (be GENTLE! the transport is fairly delicate), let evaporate, reassemble. And for safety's sake, unplug the unit... just in case you've drank some of the Everclear and decide bobbing for capacitors is a good idea.

What is great about Everclear is that if you have some left, it makes one hell of a shot! Ohhhhh by golllie........

Thanks Guys. I'll have to remember to have the shot after I do this, and not to have one just to steady my hands.
