Jack I am not trying to dispute the fact that this guy may have a 'Charley' replica but having 'the' Charley? I don't think so. Stevie Ray's 'Lenny' is the only SRV personally owned guitar that the Vaughan estate has ever sold. It was sold at Eric Clapton's Crossroads 2004 auction for $623,500.

From the auction site...

>>>> Lot #83 - Fender Composite Stratocaster (circa 1965 and later) $623,500
(Pre-Sale Estimate: $15,000 - $20,000)
“Lenny” - Donated by Jimmie Vaughan from the Estate of Stevie Ray Vaughan – used by SRV throughout his career. This is the only personal guitar of SRV to be released by the Estate into the public domain. SECOND HIGHEST PRICE FOR A FENDER STRATOCASTER

EDIT: Upon further review I now read where you say this is a guitar that 'he played', he may have at one time or another. Either way, it's a nice piece. I already have next winter's project in mind, a DIY SRV 'Number 1' replica to have as a corner piece...should look nice in the new room.

Yeah, SRV allegedly "played" this guitar. As the poster said over at AVS "This is the 5th one made of the 23 that Charley's made. This one is one that Stevie played."

Whether he "played" it or owned it it would still be a nice piece to have in a collection.

For the record, the guitar in the post was made at Charleys Guitar Shop here in Dallas. The guitars name isnt Charley. Charleys guitar shop is the shop that SRV as a teen and young adult hung out at and was owned by a guy named Charley.
There have been several guitars made at Charleys that SRV actually played for promotion or for studio work.
On another note the luthier that made the guitar in question (besides being a really nice guy) worked on all of SRVs guitars and now builds and plays most of the guitars for Carlos Santana.
I cant remember his name of hand, but when I was first interested in learning to play the guitar I dropped by Charleys one day and this "guy" that was there just visiting helped me pick out my 1st guitar. After he had left, Les (the guy behind the counter) asked me if I knew who just helped me pick out a guitar.
Anyway..... there were at least 3 guitars like the one in the AVS post made, and although SRV didnt tour with these guitars, they were made to his specs and were played by him even it was just briefly.
I know I would LOVE to own one.

Rene Martinez is the luthiers name that built that guitar and helped me pick out my 1st guitar.

Here's an interesting read.

Bray, here's a pretty good SRV interview for a magazine from 1984 where Stevie describes most of his guitars. I believe 1984 is about the time Stevie got the 'Charley' guitar.

SRV interview

Good reading.
